I doubt you'll see much difference between the two combos, particularly at low ISOs. Wouldn't be surprised if the 15-85 was better in the corners on the wide end.

agree, from the images I have seen the 15-85 definitely has better corners at 24mm equiv.

And why trust a rating that uses just a few numbers for performance of a (zoom) lens? It's a joke when performance varies with focal length, aperture, focus distance etc. and within the frame ... And people have different priorities when it comes to image quality. The DXO number can be nothing more than a very rough approximation of the image quality of the lens.

agree... to some degree

on wide end 15-85 beats the L...agree - and that is where I use my 15-85

Not true according to DXOMark's test.  24-105L at 24mm is very sharp.

the 9 Mpix reduction for the 24-105 on 5d2 is bothersome though for an L

Still beats EF-S 15-85 or 17-55/2.8 IS on 7D/60D - 12 vs 8 P-MPix

hi mpxl crushes these normal range F4 zooms,

F4 zooms still resolves more on high MP FF cameras but with diminishing return.

except the new $2200 24-70 f2.8 II

Sure better lenses take more advantage of high pixels cameras.

If your buying into sigma 35 f1.4 and 70-200 F2.8 II, then high mpxl is helping.

True but that is different topic.  More MP need better lenses to fully take advantage of.

$3K for these lenses, then you are ready for FF

Not true. You can have wonderful photos with 24-105L that generate better photos than EF-S 15-85 or 17-55 on APS-C, period.

don't fall for the FF kit combo trap - unless you intend to sell the glass and get glass that takes advantage of high mpxls

More and more will move to FF as Canon and Nikon now lower entry price for FF with budget cameras 6D and D600 respectively.  They find FF take better photos in landscape, portrait, studio, event and even FF cameras will have better and better features as D600 did and Canon has to follow in their next 6D II so even entry FF cameras are enough for soccer mom with enough pixel density.  Canon might update its aged old 28-300mm with a lighter/cheaper super-zoom as Nikon did (which is a very good zoom).
