Best Fixed-Lens, Multi-Use (i.e. Portrait, Landscape, Macro, etc.) Camera Right Out of the Box?

I completely realize there will be differing opinions on this, as well as different standards for "best," but if you had to buy a fixed-lens camera for someone who loved taking pictures but didn't know anything about modifications like exposure, sharpness, bokeh, etc., what camera would you choose?  Price can be up to $750, but if you have a suggestion that's beyond that limit, mention it anyway.  Old models (like the Canon s95) are also in the running if they can still be bought somewhere.  Portability is a must, but it doesn't have to be pocketable.  Thanks much!
