Let me add the following:

When i-resolution is on, the jpeg engine of the camera increases the sharpness of the image in a special (they say "intelligent") way. All edges on your image are more distinct and because of that it seems that the sharpness and resolution have been increased. In the same time the smooth, flat areas of the image are left without change (which should mean that the noise has not been amplified).

In FZ200 you have 3 situations: I-res and I-zoom  OFF

I-res ON and I-zoom OFF

I-res ON and I-zoom ON.

In LX7 you have more I-res options (OFF, LOW, STANDARD, HIGH).

Does it help?
