DigLloyd alludes we can expect a D4X THIS YEAR:

What do you think? If Nikon can stitch a D7000 sensor into a D800 (more or less), then they can stitch a D7200 sensor into a 56mp FX sensor too. And I would think Nikon can afford to do it if they stick to the $7,999 price bracket.

A little birdie suggests that we will see a 56-megapixel Nikon D4x this year. The term “D4x” is used loosely of course; it could have a different designation than D4x. And of course corporate strategic decisions can affect actual release dates."
