Some rules I find useful are:

1. Never format card except in camera.

2. Never let someone not familiar with the camera "play" with it.

3. Never touch the contact points on card, battery, or camera.

4. When a problem such as yours happens, remove lens and reattach. Be sure to not touch contact points except to clean them.

5. Do not set camera down in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

6. Do not aim lens directly at the sun for a photograph.

7. Keep away from extreme cold. Your manual will indicate acceptable temperatures.

8. Do not remove card except to transfer photos and reformat card. Yes people do this all the time, and people sometimes pay for this.

You probably know all this stuff but it never hurts to have a review.
