Actually, I find that setting focus peaking to medium or high can be very useful when the light or scene is low contrast. As I stated above, in a high contrast scene or in very contrasty light, focus peaking works better when set to low. Again, focus peaking is a tool that one needs to learn to use. I find it to be a very useful tool. When taking photos of people, I can often set peaking to just give a glint around the person's eye and nothing else in the scene and then I know the eye is in perfect focus.
