AE-Lock with shutter button - Anyone use it?

After years with my D700 I just discovered that I can lock exposure with a half press of the shutter button (Custom Menu C1)

I was wondering how to lock exposure particularly when using Dynamic 3D tracking and this setting does the trick perfectly. I am curious if the technique has pitfalls I haven't considered, or if anyone else uses this setting.
