Battery acid can leak from the battery compartment to the interior of the flash where it can do major damage over time. Cleaning the battery compartment will do nothing to mitigate this. Also, I would *never* use steel wool for such an exercise since minute particles of steel can end up in places where you'd never want them to be. I would also be very cautious of using any sort of friable abrasive material for the same reason.
