The D40 has a Reset button hidden behind one of the flaps (can't remember which one) which resets more than the two-button reset. Use a paperclip (Apple's SIM tray tool is ideal for this) and see if that makes any difference.

Also, there is a non-accessible back-up battery inside the camera which drains after 2-3 months of non use, and if your main battery was removed or drained, the backup is likely drained too. I would leave a fully-charged main battery in the camera, leave the ON/OFF switch in the ON position for a couple of days and see what happens.
