Picture Quality

Would anyone like to comment on why my 7D takes superb pictures in RAW mode and average pictures in JPEG. I just read on DPREVIEW on a old post about converting RAW to JPEG, where the author mentioned that in JPEG mode the camera 7D has to make many adjustments which alters quality.  I have used the JPEG mode for 7 years and last night I decided to go to RAW mode "so I could have more control when dediting". I could not believe my eyes, I did not convert the pictures to JPEG yet and they look great.
