In addition to not stopping down so far, you can also use a little longer lens - maybe 50mm @ f2.8.  If you shoot again, pay attention to the background and keep distractions relatively far from the subjects (completely out of the photo if possible).  In general, you want the distance from the camera to the subject to be small and the distance from the subject to the background to be large.  However, if you use a wide angle lens, you will have trouble with just about anything showing in the background.
