I am still hoping someone on a Mac (OS 10.6.8) will help me with how to do a nozzle check without initiating a change from matte black to photo black each time

As the others said, just do it from the printer's console panel: Menu > Test Print > Nozzle Check > Manual > Print. There is no need to do it throught the OS and the driver software.

But, you should be able to set the default paper to matte so that the MK/PK switch doesn't happen even if you do it through the software.

I called Epson and he went through it with me on my Mac and said it's a glitch!

It won't happen using the control panel on the printer, problem solved, phew!
