Make a paper shim to put between the adapter and lens, or file the back end of the lens. It only takes a thousandth too much protrusion into the body to stop the mirror.

Many M42 lenses aren't worth much, so filing them down is really the best way to fix this issue and maintain infinity focus. Be sure to figure out a way to keep the filings from getting into the lens if you decide to file it down.

Above is a shot of the rear end of a Auto Takumar 35f/3.5 I filed down for use on a Canon. Not pretty, but it works great.
