I'm comfortable shooting to 3200 on d7000.  High ISO only comes into play during dance recitals/competition, etc. and indoor sports.  My preference is lens stopped down 1 stop from max up to 3200 and then go from there either wide open, reduce shutter speed, or up to 6400 or any combination thereof.   I'm concerned about people, so if the subject is lit and the scene is dark, i'll meter person.  When you get to 6400 with any crop skin turns to mush or plastic with noise reduction, but can be acceptable.  I took some test shots at 12,800 this weekend for kicks and it's very, very rough.  If it gets to that I just put the camera up.
