Coolpix A - Nikon announces DX mirrorless camera
Mar 5, 2013

Interesting announcement that catches up to the earlier rumor of the DX sensor Nikon Coolpix with a fixed 18.5mm f/2.8 lens for $1100 here and here.  Note, this isn't just shipping with a prime lens - the lens is not removable or changeable in any way.

For about the price of a D7100, you get no viewfinder, no interchangeable lenses, a 16.2MP DX sensor (perhaps the D7000 sensor).

This is the beginning of DX sensored mirrorless cameras from Nikon.  I would expect many more in the future.  Perhaps a fixed lens camera came first because they don't have a new line of interchangeable lenses ready to go with a new mirrorless launch.

There are lots of different ways to look at this camera I guess.  One the one hand, it's very compact so this is definitely the smallest DX sensor camera from Nikon.  On the other hand, it's less capable than the D3200 in almost all regards (except size) for nearly double the price.  Or, for the same money, you could get a massively more capable D7100.

Right now, there's a serious premium (in both money and in specs) being paid for the smaller size of mirrorless.
