I have been out with a friend testing the Tamron on his d800e and my d600 over the past month. He has tested one and returned it for another and both copies will not autofocus in live view at 300 unless you try 5 to 10 times and maybe it will get focus once. Same performance on my d600 and testing the Nikon at the same time all on tripod the Nikon does not have this problem. They work fine at 70 though.

I don't have that problem. Why are you using live view at 300mm?

Here's the Tamron wide open at 300mm in poor light and handheld. Original and big crop. You can easily see the stitching in the label. My Nikon 70-300vr was softer than this, but bad by any means.

Obviously you can get sharper results, but who cares? This is fine. And the VC is rock solid at 300mm. I plan to test it against the Nikon 300mm F4 AF-S shortly.
