Who says you can't do that with an LCD screen? I do it all the times - actually I believe I have never held the DPs at arm length.

Anyway: people have their preferences and I for instance actually don't like viewfinders (I had enough analog DSLRs to appreciate the arrival of LCD screens on cameras).
