Money where my mouth is: 24-70L Mk1 is not that bad

I have been reading so many posts on the 24-70 MKI and the vast majority talk about how great a lens it is. In fact, it has been such a highly regarded lens that it took Canon 10 years (it was introduced in 2002) to be able to "improve" on it with the MKII.
