USB-powered external drives are generally 2.5", whereas AC-powered ones are 3.5".
I prefer the 2.5" ones for their compactness & convenience, but they tend to be about twice the cost of their bigger brothers per GB. I don't think one is more reliable than the other.
Amazon is selling a 2TB 2.5" external drive for under $150.
Good luck.
I have 6 external hard drives, 3 tower type,3 compact. all have worked as expected so far.Brands: Toshiba,Western Digital,Seagate, just about all are back ups of each other progressing forward to the new HD I got last month. at this moment, I don't trust the cloud based back up services yet because even they fail (power outages, ect.) & like the external systems, you may not have access to your files when you need them, the downside of the ex.hd are theft, fires. the compact ex.hd can be stored in a small/large fireproof safe with a rating of one hour more.
