according to most reviews 7D construction is rugged and made of Magnesium alloy.

Do 'most reviews' investigate the internal structure of the 7D? If not, why are they even relevant to this discussion?

I have referenced above one previous discussion on the forum.

Look at what you referenced, particularly the picture of the D300 and 7D side by side. The D300 you can't see the fron panels because Nikon leaves them off to show the metal bits underneath (the front panel is plastic). On the 7D you can only see the front panel because Canon leaves it on to hide the plastic bits underneath. They also put the lens mount on, which is misleading because it does not attach to the metal skin, but the plastic chassis underneath. Basically, the marketing folks of both are giving you images which show what the want to show and lead you to believe what they want you to believe. In Nikon's case they don't want you to see the plastic front panel, in Canon's case they don't want you to see the plastic chassis.

But there no point in arguing.

No, there isn't, because you're wrong.

Bucketful of encomia will not improve the sales of 300s

The D300s is a dead camera. Its sales will be taken over by the D7100, which offers a great package for the price, with essentially the same construction as the 7D - well designed plastic chassis and metal outer panels. The difference is that the 7D has a metal front and baseplate cover while the D7100 has plastic there. However, since those parts are non-structural and can be easily and cheaply replaced, it's not a huge issue in practice. All Nikons, right up to the D4 have plastic front panels, and it doesn't seem to be an issue.
