It's not necessary to get one relative to your screen - especially if all you are doing are light retouching of photographs. Graphic artists tend to lean towards larger sizes merely because we have been trained to draw a certain way and when illustrating, some find it easier to have a larger area to work with.

So really unless you already know a need for a large tablet, you probably don't need one. I think a nice medium sized tablet is usually good for almost anyone's general needs. I am a graphic designer as well as a "hobby" photog and I use the medium Intuos5. I am not sure how the bamboo sizes compare but you can probably find actual measurements online.
