As you know, I'm a new convert to Nikon so I haven't personally used a lot of Nikon glass. I do know a shooter or two that uses the 200-400 for wildlife and for them its their go to lens. I guess it depends on what you shoot. For me the conveinience and flexibility of a zoom for the wildlife I photograph is essential. $4000 is a great price for this lens especially when you've had a chance to check it out. That being said, its a lot of $$ too.
