X100S vs X20 Studio Comparison Test : Advice From Experts Would Be Appreciated
Mar 1, 2013

As some forummers here have mentioned earlier, this studio test may not accurately represent the actual performance of the cameras due to some discrepancies/anomalies/whatever in the test conditions, though I would think judgment through this method may be more accurate than looking at a set of similar images from both cameras.

Some of the images taken from the studio test are as below. Image of the X20 at the top, X100S at the bottom.

Questions as follows:-

1) Why does the X20's textured black board at the background show more detail than the X100?

2) Why does the red flower in the X20's image initially showed a more saturated color and better detail than the X100S at ISO100 and ISO200, but at ISO400 onwards it is the X100S that showed better detail than the X20?

I would truly appreciate some feedback on this matter. Thanks.

ISO100

X20

X100S

Impressions:-

Black textured background - The X20 shows more detail in this area. The fine horizontal lines can be easily seen on the X20's image. These lines are blurred and look soft on the X100S.

Green apples - The green apples on the X100S show more detail and saturated colour than the X20.

Red flower - Look at the petal and the thing in the middle. The X20 shows a more saturated colour and slightly more detail than the X100S

ISO200

X20

X100S

Impressions:-

Black textured background - Similar results to ISO100. The X20 shows more detail in this area.

Green apples - Similar results to ISO100. The green apples on the X100S show more detail and saturated color than the X20.

Red flower - Similar results to ISO100. The X20 shows a more saturated color and slightly more detail than the X100S.

ISO400

X20

X100S

Impressions:-

Black textured background - The X20 shows more detail in this area. The fine horizontal lines can be easily seen on the X20's image. These lines are blurred and look soft on the X100S.

Green apples - The clarity of the X20 clearly takes a dip here. The green apples on the X100S show substantially more detail and saturated color than the X20.

Red flower - Tables are turned here. Instead of the X20 exhibiting more detail and saturated colors than the X100S at ISO100 and ISO200, the image on the X100S here shows significantly more detail than the X20.

X20

X100S

Impressions:-

Similar results to ISO400 except that the X20 now shows more noise here.

ISO1600

X20

X100S

Impressions:-

The X20 shows considerably more noise here.

ISO3200

X20

X100S

Impressions:-

The X20 appears to be losing it here as the X100S remains clean.
