Thus the term 'dumb luck'. Think of the blind leading the blind. In most cases, it'll end up tragically. But in a vanishingly small share of cases, it'll end up gloriously.

I wouldn't say I doubt him, but I'd be happy to have a chance to clarify a few things with him. For instance, how does he delineate 'things'? Is it actually possible to know all there is to know about any one thing without also knowing all there is to know about all other things?

Does a fork-lift driver need the same depth and breadth of understanding of the physical sciences as does a structural engineer? A mechanical engineer? Does either of the engineers need to have the same depth and breadth of understanding of the physical sciences as a practical physicist - let's say, a PhD working at CERN? Does a PhD at CERN need to have the same breadth and depth of understanding of the physical sciences as a theoretical physicist who's searching for a TOE in a 26-dimensional multiverse that can only be imagined and, perhaps, theoretically proven, but never sensed (by us)?

And if the theoretical physicist hasn't discovered a TOE, then he doesn't wholly know the thing he's devoted his whole life to studying and may never know it, and one would have to ask Mr. Publius whether said theoretical physicist should have, perhaps, pursued some other occupation.

I don't have a Magister, unfortunately. Maybe one of these days, if I'm motivated to pursue one. I don't know.

Why do we give a rat's ear about whether or not anyone in this discussion is interested in expanding their knowledge of the subjects being discussed?
