I understand that both incident and reflective meter have to be calibrated to something (18% or 12% is up to debate). My understanding was that when incident meter was calibrated to camera & lens combination, it should give "accurate exposure" regardless what subject is being photographed (i.e. white background should appear white). On the other hand, using reflective metering white background would appear mid-gray.
