It is impossible to use the technology from a modern, state of the art, high performance small photosite sensor and build a large photosite sensor from it. Some of the hurdles could probably be overcome by diverting R&D money and efforts from the much more promising small photosite research, but some will involve so much compromise that the end result will likely be inferior in pretty much every aspect in the end.

Interesting, can you site any data on this?  Because what I see is companies like Panasonic and Canon that seem to be holding down the mp count on their more pro cameras like their LX and G series (as was already stated by MoreoreLess).

If they are already counting photons as you stated then there seems to be no reason for packing on more pixel... unless they're planning on selling sensors for smartphones
