The 18-105mm is not any better in sharpness. However, the 35mm f/1.8 is definitely supposed to be super sharp at the correct aperture. You should shoot at f/4 or f/5.6 to maximize sharpness. By the time you stop down to f/8, diffraction kicks in and quality is not much better than the 18-55mm.
