Took this photo while on a walk around the neighborhood. It doesn't feel like a good photo but something draws me to it. Maybe I've been on ming thein's blog too much lately.
I wanted to ask the experts here what they thought about this photo. Not a great photo, I know, C&C please. You can tear it apart, my feelings won't be hurt
compositionally there are a number of problems.
The primary focal point, the walk sign is not at any of the Rule of thirds intersections and is too close to a frame border. The photo has strong horizontal linear elements (lines in the pavemets) which are not level. About the only good thing that can be said about the composition is that the negative space on the left side draws the viewer's attention to the pole and thus the subject. Leading lines (painted stripes, diagonal lines in lower left corner) lead out of the frame rather than drwing eye to the subject of the photograph which leads to the bigest problem:
The photo has no obvious theme, and thus the compositional elements even if they were corrected can not support a theme that does not exist.
In sum, this photo is an exercise in photographic self stimulation. It does nothing to engage the viewer or communicate with the viewer. Thus, the only thing the photo communicates is the photographer's self absorbtion.
One wonders why someone would take a photo like this.

And how!
I agree with many of your comments. I hadn't put too much thought into taking the photo but I think it's a photo I'll return to re-take with the tips I've gotten here.
There is actually something intruiging (sp?) about the graphic elements (the lines) that could make a great photo.
But, I think you have to first figure out what that thing is, then you can incorporate that into a theme that would produce an excellent photo.
As another commenter pointed out, I hope to be able to retake this photo with a subject walking by, preferably blurred to show movement. Perhaps that would add theme to this photo.
Yes, that would be an improvement but I encourage you to thing about what that would communicate and then adapt the composition to amplify that.
I personally had mixed feelings about this photo. It felt empty and boring yet something drew me to it, hence my sharing of the photo and asking for opinions and C&C.
I know you did and also that you were presenting it as sort of photographic Rorhshock test to see how we would respond.
What I learned most from this exercise is that photography is subjective. While you and many others didn't enjoy the photo, many did.
Yes, but I don't really think they were being honest with you.
Some found the composition bad, some good, some found the photo interesting because of the unusual composition.
It is interesting, but compositionally "incomplete".
Among some friends, some found a message about chaos, about directions in life, etc in the photo as well.
Nah, that was just B.S. to make you feel good.
I guess I just find it interesting that there is no "right answer" as in math or science to composition nor photography in general.
But really there are.
The same types of photo's with the same types of compositional elements win photo contests over and over.
There are rules that can make an ordinary scene extra ordinary.
There are some photogrphers on this board that can actually do that whenever they want.
LinconB is one of them. That is why I get so frustrated with hiim when he will not give and honest, direct critique.
Hence I appreciate your first few paragraphs but I don't think the comments in the last couple were necessary.
They weren't.
That was hyperbole to get the discusson going.
I'm trying and learning, that's why I took a photo like this, and some enjoyed it.
I know you are trying. I see it in your Gallery. You have a few very nice shots where you have identified a theme for the photo (John Hancock (?) Bldg.) and selected a composition that matches. But in most of the others I see that something has caught your attention, but you struggle to identify exactly what it is and then select a composition that matches.
This isn't an easy skill to pick up but they have exercises in art school to do that so it is a "learnable" skill.
So, why not take your photography to the next level?
Learn and apply some basic compositional rules, think about the possible themes in a scene and make them match up. You will be much more satisfied with your work.
I also don't think you need to fight against every other commenter that has posted along this thread. It's subjective.
Really I do.
They are just being mutual syncophants.
That is not healthy.
We should respect each other's opinions.
If I believed that those were their honest oppinions I would.
But I know that in general, they do not post thier honest oppinions.
I sincerely thank you for your C&C and analysis of my photo, but please don't instigate arguments to prove your taste in photography is objective.
My taste is irrelevant.
I am talking about basic rules like: Rule of Thirds, False Attachements, Leading Lines, Negative Space, Use of Complimentary Colors, etc.
And most importantly, having a theme for every photo and selecting a composition that reinforces that theme.
Those are not "subjective" items, they are generally accepted rules of the Visual Arts and are taught at all art schools.
Their application is but not the rules themselves.
