As has already been said the in-camera processing options are unavoidable and vary substantially between brands and models. There is no common base point for cameras which could be used for such a comparison.

Factory default jpeg settings can have a variety of colour settings, for example Bright, Vivid or Natural all of which will look very different from each other. Then you have the problem of whether one brand's Bright is the same as any other (it won't be!). It won't even be the same between different generations of the same model from the same brand.

Other parameters such as contrast, sharpening and noise reduction are just as varied, some cameras offer lots of control, some none, and all will have different default settings.

Hi Steve. As I said, I am fairly new to all this, so I bow to your superior knowledge in this point. The fact that different brands, & even different models within the brands have varying ways of processing in camera, I think, is what some of us want to know, & see what quality each one gives when set correctly for the situation, without extra processing via PS, lightroom etc. If the same results can be obtained with a £500 camera, then what's the point spending 2 or 3 times that, if extra PP gives the same results? I am not counting different formats here, like FF, etc. As a relative newby, my posts are intended to be taken as questions, & I am always ready to accept if I have got the wrong end of the stick, so to speak. Cheers.
