That is my guess too, they likely used the same layout for the older 20 MP sensor and modified it for the circuitry for the phase detect sensors. As you say, let us hope they took advantage of the re-layout to improve noise performance, but I suppose some of the technology Sony uses is patented.

If they didn't improve noise performance, I wouldn't care, but it would be a nice opportunity to do so, and it would prevent people from saying "the Samsung is nice but isn't any good at high ISO", which isn't true. Yes, it could be better, but it does clean up nicely.

my concern right now is overall camera responsiveness from AF speed and accuracy, buffer, processing time and shutter lag. so far I'm missing a lot of shots due to the shortcomings. I'm not sure if using an Android O/S would work wonders, if the buffer and processing time wouldn't experience or atleast minimize any hiccups. lastly, the freedom to play with the images. so far, I wasn't impressed with the video showing the access speed of the NX300. although I would give it the benefit of a doubt that it still not the production model. as far as noise, an improved A/D converter and better NR implementation might do the job alone.
