normal portrait range is 70 - 150mm, so on a ASP-C sensor like the D5100/5200 you'b be a bit on the long side with the 55-200, but it's sharpest below 150 (if you require sharp portraits) so use the short end or a tad up from there and you should be fine. Most lenses are designed to operate at the cleanest stopped down about 2 stops, so stick around f8 or f11, and between 55 and 85 mm and you have a very sharp lens indeed. The VR will help you in low light. It's light, so handholding it at around 60th or 125th sec will be no problem.
