Does this look a little better to you? The sky around the tree is still lighter though.

It does look different.

But it's further from reality then the original one... (sorry)

The lighting conditions are very special in this area, due (I think) to the lakes, surrounding mountains and weather systems colliding above the Reschenpass. The border between Austria and Italy is also a kind of border between micro climate conditions. Just 10km north (in Austria) it's most of the time very different weather conditions. While it could be raining on the north side of this division, it's a lot dryer and less humid air on the Italian side of the border. Just 50kms more south you already encounter the first palm trees!

Also, what is this structure.

That's reinforcement along the road. To prevent the slope from sliding down onto the road, into the lake.
