The short answer is that the prices listed on http://www.nikonusa.com are basically irrelevant as they seem to reflect historical prices, not current prices.

What matters is what the cameras actually sell for at a reputable dealer.  For example, at B&H, the D7000 is $896 and the D7100 is $1196 which is as you would expect.
