Let me put in a good word for my birding set-up, a Sony DSLR with the old Minolta 500mm AF Reflex lens (the world's only autofocusing mirror lens).  This lens was also manufactured by Sony for several years, and although it is no longer being made, used copies are fairly common (KEH has a couple for under $600, under "35mm, Minolta Maxxum" rather than "Sony Digital").

You will need to like the camera's performance at higher ISOs, since the lens has a fixed F/8 aperture, and some people hate the ringlet bokeh, but in return you get a 500mm lens that weighs less than one and a half pounds.

I use it on an old Sony A700, but I know people have good results on Sony's more recent cameras.
