From this article, the Sony Camera division did have access to the 36MP sensor but chose to not use it:
I personally don't think there is anything wrong with the sensor itself but it maybe ahead of its time in terms of all the other things that are required to work with a sensor to make a full operational camera body. Hence my comment about a Trojan Horse.
Note also the comment in the article about XQD and Sony's reason for not using it. Another gift horse from the Greeks...
