Tele travel options//Nikon 70-210mm f4-5.6 AF-D Needs to Go..
Feb 26, 2013

Hello,

I just came back from a trip and decided that my Nikon 70-210mm f4-5.6 AF-D needs to go.. would like to hear your thoughts on tele travel options..

Thanks in Advance..

The background:

- I have a zoom kit (Nikon 24-70 2.8 + Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1), mainly for "planned" shooting..

- I then have the light kit for travel.. (nikon 20mm f2.8, Nikon 28mm f1.8G, Nikon 60mm f2.8G + Nikon 70-210mm)

- I shoot a D300 with the light kit and would occasionally shoot my D3 with the light kit.  Plan on using the D3 more often..

- I love primes much more than the zooms especially on the wide side; the 20mm f2.8 gets used 90% of the time on my D300.. I plan on using my D3 with the light kit more often so I can make the 28mm the most used for its better IQ..

- Samples of my shooting on the wide side:

- Now on the tele side i almost always like to have a tele option for not knowing what i might come across.. when used, below are some samples with the 70-210mm (spread over the range):

But then I'm hardly ever satisfied with the IQ of the 70-210mm and wish I had a better IQ lens..I don't do much landscape/tripod so I like to have the option of shooting as wide open as possible. The options I've been considering are:

Nikon 85mm 1.8G: light weight and fast but hardly versatile.. can one be creative on the tele side given the style above?  .. i can fully manage on the wide side and actually enjoy it but not sure i can on the tele side..

Nikon 70-200mm f4: A great option but can't seem to justify having the 2.8 along with the f4.. i love having the 2.8 which also serves as my portrait lens.. also adds weight/size to my current light kit..

Nikon 70-300mm VR: don't need the range and i'm sure i won't be satisfied going from the 70-210mm to the 70-300mm, will feel like a half-way solution..

Nikon 180mm f2.8: too limited..

Thanks,

Samer
