The D7100 has 15 cross type auto focus points and the 7D has 19 cross type auto focus points.
So, what are you saying? That the other 32 points are inactive because they are not cross points?
edit: and the D7100's cross type focus points are all crammed on the center 3 columns.
And the truth of the matter is that the 7D does not have '19 cross points'. It has one 'cross point', 2 'I' points, 4 'T' points and 8 'H' points. the reason for this is that vertical sensors are ineffective towards the edges, so Canon moves them in from where they ought to be. Nikon engineers decided since they were ineffective, they wouldn't bother. Unless you do controlled tests, it's difficult to say which results in better AF overall.

Bob, may I ask where you got that specific info on re the 3 sets of sensors that are Not cross ?

Why would you expect Nikon engineers to state that? It is apparent from the optics - Nikon engineers are needed, or Canon for that case. Why would you think Nikon engineers fail to build cross points at the edges? Obviously if Canon can, they can - the just have different views about whether it is worthwhile.

Not at all. The 'Canon based stretch' is pretending that an AF point doesn't exist unless it is a cross point. There are good reasons to concentrate on the more effective alignment at the edges. The proof is in the usage, not the marketing fluff.
