I live in the rainy part of Oregon, so I just use an umbrella. That works well as long as there isn't a lot of wind. Here's some samples of pictures that I took under an umbrella with my Canon T2i (550D) cameras. It takes some patience and skill to hold both the umbrella and camera/lens together. I carry also a soft dry cloth with me in case some rain spray does get on the lens...oh...and just one other. I bring with me both cameras with lenses attached so I don't have to change lenses in the rain. I just pull out the best combination out of one of my two camera bags.

I often use my 7d with the 40mmf/2.8 (indoors and flash) so I could do with an umbrella, but I'm definitely not capable of holding the camera almost steady or even upright with one hand when I have the 70-200Lf/4. (I'm not geriatric yet, but I'm getting close.)
