Really? And I didn't know you had a light meter on the scene in the photo I posted. Or do all evenings adhere to some sort of sunset brightness standard that no one told me about?
Jeeze, if your 12 stop DR sensor can just about capture the full tonality of a scene, chances are.... it's a 12 stop scene. Although it should be noted that you've got a lot of blown out areas there. So would that shot have been better if taken with a higher DR sensor? You bet.
Nah, I know the DR of my 7D is not even close to 14 stops but my guess is my original scene has just as much DR as the one you captured (if not more). I spent all of about 5 minutes on that shot in CS5 and it was shot only as an experiment for highlight and shadow recovery.
How would a higher DR camera have done a better job? I couldn't look into the Sun in that scene when it was captured but I suppose you'd like it to look like this 3 shot HDR blend.

YMMV but to me this shot is too flat and that's not how the sun appeared when it was captured.

Well, personally, I'd take the 3 shot HDR blend you just posted, then put the original CS5 shot you posted earlier on a new layer, and adjust the opacity of that layer to 70%. That way, you get some of the DR and colour (meaning the sun isn't quite such a big white blob), without the flatness of the HDR version, and to me that looks reasonably good. But to each their own.
I probably could've used the RAW file 1 stop under the one posted which would render the sun smaller and less blown and I'd still have enough room to lift the shadows for adequate detail. I actually do agree that a multi-frame HDR is a better way to capture (in RAW) and then blend in post as you will end up with better mid-tones in the final result. I also realize that not all scenes lend themselves to multi-frame shots.
I think part of the issue people have with DR is differentiating between "HDR" (which is post processing), and DR (which is capture). The latter doesn't necessarily lead to the former. It takes relatively little adjustment to make a 14 stop sensor image have the same contrast as a 12 stop sensor image (while retaining softer highlight roll-off and shadow detail), but for some reason lots of people think you have to go fricken crazy and lift the shadows to hell and back.
I don't disagree with what you've said. I believe that having the extra 2 stops of DR is obviously good if one works their RAW files in post and captures scenes that require the added lattitude. I just don't find the need frankly in my style of shooting. IMO many look for ways to use it because they've got it and that's fine and maybe it opens new avenues of creativity for them but I don't think one should need to lift shadows more than 2 stops even when exposing to capture the highlights of a challenging scene. Hans Kruse has demonstrated this many times on this forum with his incredible single frame captures in the Dolomites with his 1Ds3. Many times they include a setting sun in the frame in dramatic light with beautiful, subtle detail in the shadows. You have to nail the exposure though but bracketing is free with digital.
