6D Dynamic Range

You see,it has absolutely nothing to do about lifting shadows. This seems to be the primary excuse for people trying to make claims that the extra DR is of no use. Some even resort to nonsensical terms like"shadow DR"... something that further reinforces a complete lack of understanding of light and range.

When measuring a subject's SBR to figure out how to place the image tonal range, with digital, unlike neg film, one exposes for the highlights. In a scene with an SBR of 12, 14 or more stops, to maintain the highlights, one may expose 2, 3, or even 4 stops or more below standard. In doing so, the highlights are maintained. However, the midtones that would have been around zone 4 or 5 are now down around zone 2. In order to bring them back to zone 5, these tones need to be moved from where they got placed back to midtone. While doing so, the shadows need to remain compressed to keep a natural appearance.

Having a camera that can maintain the integrity of the signal is important....otherwise, your midtones will become muddy, noisy and could even exhibit banding after being moved back. This is what this is all about. It has nothing to do with lifting shadows. Even a basic understanding of what goes on in the darkroom/lightroom should negate this entire discussion. The fact that it goes on and on shows that there is a lot of misinformation and a general lack of knowledge present here.

One other thing....if the tables were reversed, and the Canon body had more rez and DR, the Canon forums would be rife with discussion about how the extra Dr is invaluable, and how the larger files are not a problem.
