The D7100 has 15 cross type auto focus points and the 7D has 19 cross type auto focus points.
So, what are you saying? That the other 32 points are inactive because they are not cross points?
edit: and the D7100's cross type focus points are all crammed on the center 3 columns.
And the truth of the matter is that the 7D does not have '19 cross points'. It has one 'cross point', 2 'I' points, 4 'T' points and 8 'H' points. the reason for this is that vertical sensors are ineffective towards the edges, so Canon moves them in from where they ought to be. Nikon engineers decided since they were ineffective, they wouldn't bother. Unless you do controlled tests, it's difficult to say which results in better AF overall.

Bob, may I ask where you got that specific info on re the 3 sets of sensors that are Not cross ? And, where Nikon engineers stated that they were ineffective ?
Seems a bit of a Nikon based stretch...just sayin. thx.
