The -1.3 EV was necessary to keep the bark on the front trees from blowing out. These are white birch and the bark is probably the brightest white you will find in nature. This was also a very bright morning and with the bright white trees occupying only a small portion of the frame (and closest portion) it is very easy to blow them out.

I kept the framing below the top of the ridge which tends to disguise how high contrast this scene really was.

The DR of the EM5 is very good and it was not wasted here. The highlights were preserved and the shadows were brought back up quite easily to even the lighting back out to how my eyes perceived the scene.

The highlight clipping warning is also very accurate, I bracketed one other exposure at -1 EV and that was all that was necessary. The -1.3 exposure held a little more contrast and that was the one I liked best of the two.
