When I think more about it, I am also less and less certain whether the four versus five sections actually makes any difference at all when it comes to stability. The joints between the segments are very tight when locked with no play at all. And the relative thinness of the final segment can be compensated for by using thicker material. As you pointed out, the two versions have the same weight.

Extending that thought, the four section version is a bit taller at the same weight, so it has to be thinner somewhere.

Yes, but on the other hand the five sections version has three more locking collars, which should add to its weight compared to the four sections versions.

I'm guessing the locking mechanism doesn't weigh that much more than a section of leg and that the locking mechanism is only about an inch tall, while the four section is about 3.5" taller than the five section version.

There likely isn't a significant difference in stability. I'm more concerned with setup time, but from the posts in this thread, there doesn't seem a significant difference in that either.

I'm leaning towards the five section because it's shorter folded, which should make carrying it easier.  A significant difference in stability or ease of  setup would tilt me the other way.
