When looking at comparisons between 6D and D600, it is always pointed out how much higher the Nikon scores in DR. (14.2 vs 12.1) I am wondering if this is really noticeable in everyday photography or is it more just numbers on paper. Do any Canon owners feel the lower DR limits their photography?

I am in the market for a FF camera and am very scared by Nikon's QC issues. I am really leaning towards Canon, but want to make sure I understand what I am getting into.

The so-called dynamic range issue is HUGELY over hyped. The Nikon gets 2 attritional stops of DR at ISO=100, a bit over 1 stop at ISO=200 and by IS0=400 it is essentially gone. So yes there is a significant benefit at the bottom end of the ISO range.

IMO, the primary benefit of the Sony technology (the engine behind the Nikon performance) is that it affords you the opportunity to lift shadows a bit more in post -- or to say it the other way, the Canon equipment is somewhat less forgiving in that regard. This is primarily due to pattern noise rather than the DR difference but this pattern noise is less of an issue in the 6D than some of the other Canons. So if for some reason you need to pull shadows 3 or 4 stops, the Nikon will give you a better opportunity for doing that and will likely have a cleaner image when you are done. However, keep in mind that thousands of photographers make outstanding pictures with this gear every day w/o issue.

BClaffs  Photography dynamic range versus ISO chart does not yet include the 6D but comparing the D800 & 5DMKIII  the D800 has an advantage up to IS0 3200 after that they are essentially equal if you want to be picky the 5DMKIII has a tiny lead at ISO 12800 & higher.
