Sony HVL -F20AM Flash and Camera Settting?

Hi I have just got myself the Sony HVL -F20AM for a rock bottom price and am trying to workout the camera settings When I shot in A mode with fill-flash selected and bounce on the flash unit this is what happens not enough light see picture, If I set the flash unit on direct all seems fine. When I put the camera in Auto mode and the flash unit in bounce it works perfectly.

Does this mean I can only use bounce when the camera is set to Auto?

Sorry if this is a bit confusing but this was an open box deal and no instructions and I'm new to all this
