What will be coming from Canon and when ?

Although Sony/Toshiba use newer fabs with later technology nodes, that is not necessarily root cause effect.  Possible impact from using newer technology nodes can be QE and lower power consumption.  DR should not be affected; this is more pixel photodiode technology.  Read noise is more design related; not sure on the impact of technology node on read noise.

More advanced technology nodes has narrower geometries, so metal interconnect is narrower.  This results in less area taken up by metal interconnect and more area can be dedicated for photo diode (higher fill factor).  So for same pixel pitch, new technology can afford more area for photo detecting.  Or if the same area is allocated for photo detecting, then newer technology node will result in smaller pixel pitch, which means more megapixels.

Rough math. Assuming the pixel size/pitch is 5um diagonal (3.5 x by 3.5 y).  There is 1 metal line running in y direction for every pixel.  This metal line width is 0.5um in Canon's older fab vs 0.18um in Sony's newer fab.  This x-length available for pixel photo diode is 3.04um for Canon's case vs 3.36um for Sony's case.  This is around 10% difference.  This might explain the QE difference, but this is not the root cause for other differences.

I suspect Sony/Toshiba are better because they spend more money and effort on sensor technology R&D.  And the newer fab (and cost associated with the fab) goes along with their strategy.

Note that Canon's sensor is only used in Canon's own cameras.  Yes, this is a big camera business, but Canon does not have direct competition for their sensors.  They just have to be good enough to get by.  On the other hand, multiple image sensor companies compete for Nikon's and other camera manufactures' business.  It is a limited competition (few vendors) for DSLR market, but multiple vendors for P&S and cell phone camera market.  So being good enough is not sufficient, they have to be the best to win business.  So there is definitely more competition and reason for investment on image sensor for Sony, Toshiba, etc.
