Triggering flash and studio lights with nikon
4 months ago

Hello,

I have a (little) problem...I bought bowens lighting system (

http://www.calumetphoto.com/eng/product/bowens_gemini_2_x_250r_two_head_kit_with_pulsar_tx/bw48002 ) and did a little bit of testing.  Since I never used lighting systems before, only remote flashes, I'm trying to figure out how to trigger all of it without purchasing additional "hardware".  I also own nikon d800 and flashes sb-910 and sb-700.

What I thought I could do is use a built-in commander mode on d800 to trigger flash to light my background, and use cell activation on the bowens kit to activate its lights.  I found out that pre-flash that d800 sends activates bowen/gemini lights and the photograph ends up dark.  Then I connected via pc-sync cable one of the gemini lights, and it flashes properly, but the other one does not.

To be honest, I don't even know what other combination I tried but i couldn't get the proper result - light my subject properly and light the background at the same time.

Can someone please suggest how do I need to set up my camera with the gear I have as I cannot seem to figure it out?  Ideally, what I want to do is use gels to change color of my background while use the bowens kit (and maybe one of my flashes too) to light my subject properly.

Thanks!
