The 17 pound question

First of all, I don't understand why you would need 17 pounds of gear, even with a Nikon DSLR system.

Nikon 5200: weighs 1.22 lbs.

Nikon 16-85mm DX lens: 17.1 oz.

Extra battery: practically nothing.

So you see, you can go backpacking with Nikon gear and it will only weigh less than 2.5 pounds.

So the question is why do you need to carry so much camera cr*p to go backpacking. Are you some sort of professional nature photographer?

Last time I went hiking, I took ONLY the 14-42mm II kit lens, and I took this photo:
