Hi, I own the 300 f/2.8 L IS mkI and x1.4 mkII and x2 mkII, I also got a used 100-400L not too long ago. The 300mm is stellar, even with the x1.4. A bit slower with x2 but still fast enough.
I use it normally on a tripod with a Wimberley II. The 300mm is handholdable that's for sure, but not as easily as the 100-400 (that's why i got it in replacement of Sigma's 50-500 DG non IS).

The 300mm is "the" best lens in Canon catalog since it came out. The new replacement is supposed to be "even better".

I have read many reviews on x2 and x1.4 mk III and they are also better than the previous version. At this time, my only thought is if they were not as extensive...... i'd readily replace them.

The weight difference between 300 IS mkI and mkII is not that much so i'll keep it that way.

I have many fabulous shots of that combo to back up my position (chez my phase gallery if you like).
With that kind of gear you cannot go wrong.
Mind you, there are many rumors that the 100-400L might be replaced in the year...

Cheers

Phil
