I have no more info on this than anyone else, but....
I think the move to on-chip PD is the real killer. It basically means there are some half-size pixels, which at 36MP would require fab tech more like a plain 72MP sensor. In other words, the 24MP with PD is probably harder to build than the straight 36MP -- more like a 48MP sensor in fab tech needed.
